Two persons died while the third got seriously injured after the motorcycle they were on fell off an unfinished road overbridge in Jalpaiguri early on Tuesday.

The deceased were Nayan Ghosh, 15, a resident of Jayantipara, and Parveen Khatun, 20, of Dinbazar, both in Jalpaiguri town.

The injured Sanju Basak, 30, is from Topamari on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri.

Police recovered the bodies and impounded the bike.

Sources said the overbridge is under construction at a railway level-crossing in Bichabhanga area of Lataguri. It is near the Mainaguri-Chalsa Road of Jalpaiguri which passes through the fringes of Gorumara National Park.

Though most stretches of the overbridge have been built on both sides of the crossing, the plank above the tracks is yet to be placed.

On Tuesday morning, as some locals were strolling in the area, they found the trio on the tracks. The mangled motorcycle was also there on the spot.

“It seems they had no inkling that the overbridge is not complete. The bike rode along the flyover and fell through the gap on the tracks. It would be a free fall of at least 20 feet,” said Subal Paik, a resident of Bichabhanga.

Residents noticed that one of the trio was trying to make a gesture with his hand.

They immediately informed the police assistance booth in Lataguri. Police reached the spot and took the injured youth to the primary health centre in Mangalbari and later to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.

The other two were also taken to the health centre where doctors pronounced them dead.

Teams from the traffic wing of Kranti and Matiali police stations have initiated a probe.

“We are trying to find out if they fell from the unfinished overbridge or there was some other accident. We will also speak with the injured youth once he recovers. We need to know where they are going,” said a Matiali police officer.
