The chairperson of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Sabyasachi Dutta, has sent letters to the mayor and other civic officials alerting them about stalls that have come up after a water body was allegedly filled up in Rajarhat.
“Apart from mayor Krishna Chakraborty, I have sent letters to the municipal commissioner and the executive engineer of the building plan department,” Dutta told Metro on Tuesday.
According to Dutta, the water body is located in Rajarhat’s Salua under Ward 5 of the BMC.
“The water body was filled up over the past couple of weeks. I was passing by the area when I noticed several stalls on the spot. I checked the municipal records and found that the area is listed as a water body,” Dutta said.
Like New Town, parts of Rajarhat are witnessing a boom in construction activities and this is not the first time that a water body has been filled up.
In March a group of residents stalled efforts to fill up a couple of ponds in Rajarhat, under Wards 2 and 3 of the BMC, not far from Salua.
A senior BMC official said that they will send a team to inspect the area.
“If indeed a water body has been filled up then we will restore it. Any illegal stalls that have been built there would be dismantled,” the official added.
BMC’s mayoral council member in charge of environment, Rahima Biwi Mondal, said they have a team of officials that monitors water bodies in the BMC area.
“We held a meeting over the issue and will send teams to inspect the water body,” Mondal said.
BMC mayor Krishna Chakraborty said that the civic body will take legal action against anyone found involved in the alleged fill-up.
