The state forest department has sent the master plan of the proposed mini zoo that will come up at the leopard rescue centre in South Khayerbari of Alipurduar district to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), seeking approval for the project.

The mini zoo has been planned at the site on the lines of the Bengal Safari Park, the only open-air zoological park that is on the outskirts of Siliguri, popular with residents and tourists alike.

The Alipurduar proposal seeks to replicate the success of the Bengal Safari Park.

“We have sent the master plan to the CZA for approval. We are waiting for communication from their end and if suggested, we will make necessary changes. Once the plan is approved, we will also secure funds for the project,” said Bhashkar JV, the chief conservator of forests (wildlife, north).

In 2005, the leopard rescue centre was opened in South Khayerbari along with a leopard safari. Some leopards were kept in an open enclosure and visitors would enjoy a safari in a battery-operated vehicle.

Also, some Bengal Tigers, which were rescued from circuses, were brought and kept at the centre. Boating was introduced at Buri Torsha, a stream that flows through the area and also some cottages were built for tourists.

“However, the tigers died in due course and the leopard safari was also discontinued. This reduced the footfall of tourists and thus, it was planned to revive the site by developing a mini zoo,” said a forest official.

The proposal, sources said, was mooted a few years back. The plan was drawn and sent to the state zoo authority.

“There is a plan to develop separate enclosures for tigers, rhinos, gaur, bears, deer, leopards, and birds. The plan has been checked by senior foresters and was then sent to the state zoo authority. Following its approval, the plan has been forwarded to CZA,” the forester added.

People associated with tourism in Alipurdur have welcomed the decision. The district, they said, is known for its rich biodiversity and forests like the Jaldapara National Park and the Buxa Tiger Reserve.

“This will be a new attraction for tourists visiting the Dooars and Alipurduar. Once the mini zoo comes up, people staying in nearby areas will be able to explore new options for earnings,” said a tour operator based in Alipurduar.
