Daribhit High School, which had resumed classes after more than 50 days of closure just a month ago, has once again been shut down.

The parents of two youths, Rajesh Sarkar and Tapas Barman, who were killed in violence related to appointment of teachers in the school, today said that they have decided to close the institution as none of their demands have been fulfilled.

The school in Chopra block of North Dinajpur district had resumed classes from November 12, after a closure of more than 50 days following the September 20 incident.

Nilkamal Sarkar, whose son Rajesh died in the violence, said: “We had allowed the school to reopen after we had got an assurance from the administration that our demands would be looked into.”

“It has been over a month but the CBI probe has not started, those arrested in the case have not been released unconditionally and action against teachers responsible for the incident has not yet been taken,” Sarkar added.

The incident is currently being probed by the Bengal CID. The parents reached the school premises around 9am on Friday and started a dharna infront of the institution’s gate as a result of which neither teachers nor the 1900-students could enter the school premises.

An oral exam was scheduled for the day. “The teachers spoke to the parents and requested them to reopen the school so that the oral exams could be conducted. The parents initially relented. After classes at 4.30pm, they locked the school gate again,” a source said.

Kanhaiyalal Agarawal, Trinamul MLA from Islampur, pointed fingers at the BJP.

“The BJP wanted to organise a rath yatra in the name of the two deceased youths but when they failed, they have now started creating unrest,” Agarawal said.

Shankar Chakravorty, the district BJP chief, said: “We are providing moral support to the victims’ families. We are not involved in the closure. TMC is politicising the issue.”
