Bengal logs 4,512 new Covid cases; nearly 2,398 in Calcutta alone

Overall, India logs 22,775 new coronavirus infections over the 24-hour period ending on Saturday morning, with active infections crossing 1 lakh

Bengal on Saturday registered 4,512 Covid cases — Calcutta accounting for 2,398 of them — as infections continued their upward spiral with the test positivity rate shooting above 12 per cent.

The state also logged nine deaths, with the active cases rising by 2,590 to reach 13,300. It was 203 days ago, on June 12, that Bengal had last counted over 4,000 daily infections.

Elsewhere in the country, Maharashtra reported 9,170 new coronavirus infections, 1,103 more than the day before, and seven deaths. Mumbai recorded 6,347 cases as infections spiked dramatically over the past 11 days.

Delhi clocked 2,716 new Covid cases, the highest count since May 21. Gujarat, too, recorded a steep rise — 1,069 infections, the first time the tally has crossed 1,000 since June 4.

Overall, India logged 22,775 new cases over the 24-hour period ending on Saturday morning, with active infections crossing 1 lakh.
