The forest department started a two-day programme at the Bengal Safari Park near here on Saturday to train guards posted at zoos and enclosures across the state in tranquillising animals.
“Many animals, including endangered species, are kept at zoos and enclosures in different parts of Bengal. On many occasions, we need to tranquillise animals for their treatment and relocation. Dart guns are used to capture animals straying out of enclosures also. That is why we need skilled staff in tranquillisation and a training has been arranged,” Bengal Safari Park director Dharamdeo Rai said.
Around 30 forest guards are attending the training.
In north Bengal, man-animal conflicts are often reported from areas near reserve forests. Elephants, gaurs and leopards often stray into villages and tea estates, leading to loss of properties and human life.
“After the safari park was opened, a leopard had gone missing and was later located. To handle such a situation, the guards should know how to use dart guns, doses and other details. The training can help them act promptly,” said a forester.
