The Bengal government on Wednesday transferred Nandini Chakraborty, a 1994-batch IAS officer posted as the secretary to Bengal governor C.V. Ananda Bose, to the tourism department following a note he sent her on Sunday releasing from the post.
“Chakraborty was transferred from the post of secretary to governor on Wednesday but nobody has been posted in her place yet,” said a senior state government official.
Initially, Nabanna did not make any move after Bose sent the note to Chakraborty as sources said ideally he should have sent the note to the chief secretary.
“It appears there has been some informal communication between Raj Bhavan and Nabanna over Chakraborty.... The state government removed her only after that,” said a bureaucrat.
When asked why nobody was deputed to the post yet, a senior official said the state government wants to wait to see if the governor has any choice.
“The state government shares a cordial relation with the new governor unlike predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the state wants to maintain it. This is why the state government did not post anybody in a hurry,” said the official.
According to sources, there is a buzz in the administrative circle that the governor is trying to put in place a new team at Raj Bhavan.
“This is why the government decided to wait and watch before making a move. The government wants to see if the governor proposes any name,” said a source.
Sources referred to administrative circle murmurs that Bose might send a list of IAS officers to the state and would like one of them as his secretary.
“He will prepare the list after holding a meeting with Jagdeep Dhankhar (in Delhi on Monday). The list is likely to include two senior IAS officers in the rank of additional chief secretary who are not in the good books of the state government and posted in less important departments,” said a source.
Chakraborty’s removal as secretary to the governor pleased the BJP camp that had alleged she was misleading the governor into forming a bonhomie with Nabanna. BJP leaders are now hoping Bose would be more proactive in confronting the state government based on the BJP’s complaints.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who had recently criticised the Raj Bhavan occupant, heaped praises on Bose on Wednesday.
“I had a meeting with him and I realised he is an extremely capable man and has a thorough understanding of legal and administrative issues,” said Adhikari.
