Youth and students’ wings of the Congress hit the streets across the state on Saturday to protest against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Parliament on Friday,a day after a Gujarat court sentenced him to two years of imprisonment in a defamation case.

A source in Bengal Congress said party workers would take part in a satyagraha on Sunday

The All India Congress Committee has asked the state units to observe a satyagraha in all district headquarters across the country. It has been mandated that all the events should beheld near statues of Mahatma Gandhi. In Calcutta, the satyagraha will be observed near the Gandhi statue on Mayo road.

“Our workers have been asked to identify a Gandhi statue near the administrative headquarters in their respective districts and demonstrate before it,” said Soumya Aich Roy, a PCC spokesperson, adding that the event would start at 10am and continue for seven hours.

On Saturday, several Youth Congress and Chhatra Parishad members took out rallies in various parts of Calcutta and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Many agitating activists were arrested.

In Nadia’s Santipur, Congress supporters blocked NH12 for about half an hour, leading to a traffic jam, and burnt Modi’s effigy. More party activists blocked railway tracks at a level crossing near Santipur railway station. GRP officials persuaded protesters to lift the blockade after 40 minutes.

A similar demonstration was staged by Congress supporters at Serampore Boattalain Hooghly. The police, however, dispersed the protesters after half an hour. Congress supporters also protested at Basirhat, Swarupnagar, Barasat and Bongaon in North 24-Parganas, and Chinsurahin Hooghly.
