Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has said Mamata Banerjee would perhaps not have been where she is today without the blessings of Rahul Gandhi’s parents.

The Behrampore MP's fresh attack on the chief minister came on Tuesday in the wake of her government's alleged non-cooperation with Rahul's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

“It makes me very, very sad, seeing this happen to Rahul Gandhi,” Chowdhury said.

“They should not forget that they would not have become netri (leader) or montri (minister) without the blessings, the backing, and the contributions from his (Rahul’s) family,” he added, referring to Mamata’s past as a Congress leader till the formation of her breakaway party in 1998, and the support she received during her stint in the Grand Old Party from deceased former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and thereafter from former UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

“If they (Trinamul Congress) come out and say it… that these impediments are being placed on the path of Rahul Gandhi and his Yatra because they dislike Adhir Chowdhury, I will stand down right away. If that is all it would take to ensure a smooth Yatra (through Bengal), I will gladly do it,” he said.

In response, Trinamul MP Santanu Sen said: “He (Chowdhury) has been relentless in attacking Mamata Banerjee and our party for months, often echoing the BJP. These statements are to be expected from him....”
