CPIM central committee member Sujan Chakraborty on Wednesday welcomed the "newfound bonhomie" between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar at the inauguration of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) here and said they should not resort to "theatrics of confrontation".
He criticised Mamata for urging the governor at the programme to see to it that the Centre does not harass industrialists by using probe agencies and wondered whether she needed to ask Dhankhar for that. Chakraborty alleged that the law and order in the state has deteriorated severely and demanded that "the police minister should resign immediately."
Mamata holds the home (police) portfolio. "The chief minister in her address (at BGBS) was full of praise for the governor and vice versa. We want the newfound bonhomie to continue. Why do they resort to theatrics of confrontation and mislead people?" the CPM leader said at a press conference here.
Mamata and Dhankhar have been at loggerheads over various issues since he took over as the state's governor in July, 2019.
"She (Mamata) means to tell the industrialists that if they invest in Bengal then the central agencies may harass them. It is a political statement, not a statement meant for the industry ... It is like inviting someone to dinner and then telling the person to see to it that the food is not poisoned," he said.

Claiming that this edition of BGBS will not bring in the much needed investments to the state "as was the case in the previous five (editions)", Chakraborty said the chief minister is making such statements only to hide these facts.
Factories in the state are closing down regularly which meant crores of mandays are lost every year. On the other hand the severe dearth of employment opportunities has led to a spurt in "tolabaji" (extortions) in the state, the CPI-M leader claimed.
