The Assembly on Friday admitted a motion brought by the Trinamul Congress condemning the ghastly violence that has been unfolding in Manipur since May 3. The motion will be discussed on Monday.
The notice for the motion was given by parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay and his colleagues Nirmal Ghosh, Tapas Roy, Birbaha Hansda, Raj Chakraborty, June Maliah, Kallol Khan and Ashok Kumar Deb.
According to a bulletin issued to the members of the House to inform them about the business of the Assembly, the motion seeks to condemn the "inhuman and barbaric actions in the strongest possible terms and at the same time urges upon the Union Government to take all necessary steps without any further delay to restore peace and to instill confidence in the minds of people".
The motion focuses largely on the plight of women in Manipur. Although it doesn't specifically refer to any incident, sources said the video of two disrobed Kuki women being paraded had prompted the treasury bench to raise the issue of women's safety. It has been claimed that the basic human rights of women are being violated and "unimaginable incidents of horror beyond the scope of description" are unfolding.
The motion condemns the administration of Manipur and alleges it has failed to protect the life and property of the common people of all sections. "This House further appeals to all the people of Manipur to maintain mutual trust and harmony for ensuring peace," the motion reads.
A five-member delegation of the Trinamul Congress had recently visited the northeastern state.
The motion will be discussed in the presence of chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP will participate in the discussion. While leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari will be one of the speakers, BJP's women lawmakers will mostly participate in the discussion.
BJP plans to highlight the alleged crimes against women in Bengal to counter the motion.
