The Bengal BJP has taken up the alleged rape of a minor girl at Matia in North 24-Parganas’ Basirhat to attack the Trinamul-led state government.

An 11-year-old schoolgirl, who went missing on Thursday, was found unconscious from a near a park in Matia on Friday. Preliminary probe by police revealed she was raped.

Police took the girl to Basirhat superspecialty Hospital from where she was shifted to RG Kar Hospital in Calcutta.

Police on Saturday arrested an aunt of the girl and accused Shahar Ali Sadar, 20, from Domjur in Howrah.

On Sunday, a group of BJP MLAs went to the hospital to meet the girl and her family, but the security personnellocked entrances to the gynaecology department, they said.

“The patient is admitted to the gynaecology department. The civic volunteers and security guards started putting shackles on the building’s door as soon as they saw us. We were told we won't be allowed in,” said Englishbazar MLA Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, a part of the delegation.

Chaudhury asked why Trinamul’s Basirhat MP Nusrat Jahan did not speak to the family of the girl who belongs to the minority community.

Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari lashed out at the government alleging breakdown of law and order. He said 500 policemen had been deployed at the hospital to ensure that none could meet her.

Adhikari and Chaudhury also claimed that a health worker in Birbhum was recently raped and murdered inside a health centre.

The BJP MLAs demanded justice for her as well.

The BJP’s North Calcutta organisational district chief Kalyan Chaubey also went to the hospital. The BJP has announced that it would hit the streets if the safetyof women in the state was not ensured.

SFI demonstrations

SFI, the students’ wing of the CPM, organised demonstrations at several places in North 24-Parganas to protest against the atrocity perpetrated on the minor and demanded punishment of the culprits. The SFI will register its protest on the issue at a rally at Matia on Monday. The North 24-Parganas district committee of the All-India Democratic Women’s Association will also take part in the rally.

A Basirhat court ordered the arrested duo to six days of police custody.

A senior officer of Basirhat police district, who is monitoring the investigation, said family feud could have led to the incident.

“Though it is not clear yet, it appears the crime is a result of family feud,” the cop said.
