The Barasat Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to Trinamool Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty who was caught on camera assaulting the owner of a cafe in New Town.
The owner of the cafe, Anisul Alam, and its manager Dipankar Ghosh had lodged two separate complaints against the actor-politician with Techno City police station.
Chakraborty’s lawyer, Alok Samajpati, said: “He has been cooperating fully with the investigation. The court granted his anticipatory bail plea against a personal bond of ₹2,000.”
The MLA from Chandipur in East Midnapore moved the bail plea a day after Alam sought Calcutta High Court’s permission to petition for protection and a fair probe.
The single bench of Justice Amrita Sinha allowed the petition to be filed.
Sources said the petition was likely to come up for hearing on Friday.
Chakraborty went to the Barasat court premises around 10.15am on Thursday and visited the chamber of public prosecutor Shantamoy Chakraborty.
The president of the North 24-Parganas District Bar Association, Shibaprasad Mukherjee, said it was “highly irregular and unjust for an accused to be sitting in the chamber of a public prosecutor”.
“I have known him for long. I am a district leader for the Trinamool Congress. Soham is an MLA from my party and had come just to talk,” Chakraborty said.
A senior officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said that their investigation was on.
Alam had earlier alleged that the police were dragging their feet. “I have faith in Calcutta High Court,” Alam said on Thursday.
