At least 60 bangles filled with cocaine have been seized from a 27-year-old tailor in Watgunge late on Saturday, police said.
The value of the seized cocaine is estimated to be more than Rs 50 lakh in the illegal drug market.
“The tailor, Abdul Rajjak, alias Sonu, was planning to send the bangles to Hong Kong through a courier,” an officer of the Calcutta police’s narcotics cell said.
“Small plastic packets filled with cocaine were concealed between the metal ring of the bangles and their lac embellishment. The packets would be visible only if the top layers were removed.”
The officer said they had information that “high-value drugs” were to be smuggled out of the country and been tipped off about an international racket active in Watgunge.
“The cocaine seized from Abdul was indeed of high quality,” the officer said.
Abdul is said to have told officers that he and other members of the racket had been active for some time and they had sent drugs to other countries a number of times.
“The men would keep the drugs inside toys, bangles and clothes and then courier them to Hong Kong,” the officer said.
Abdul has been charged under several sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The narcotics cell of the city police has arrested more than 140 people till June this year and seized around 20.5kg of synthetic drugs, including cocaine, heroin, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide and Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, among others.
Around 1,187kg of marijuana has also been seized.
