The trend of violence that began with the announcement of the rural polls continued on counting day also. The Telegraph presents a few incidents of violence and alleged malpractices that marred the counting on Tuesday
Ashok Nagar (North 24-Parganas)
Mahadeb Mati, the Trinamul candidate of Bhurkandi panchayat in Habra 2 block, allegedly swallowed a bunch of ballot papers inside a counting station after he had "lost" to CPM candidate Rabindranath Majumdar by four votes. Mati, however, claimed that he won the poll by 40 votes. The administration kept the result in abeyance for scrutiny.
(In a similar incident, Paritosh Roy, the election agent of a Trinamul candidate in Cooch Behar 1 block, also allegedly swallowed two ballots)
Saltora (Bankura)
A car of Saltora BJP MLA Chandana Bauri was vandalised allegedly by Trinamul supporters near the Netaji Centenary College counting centre. Sources said the MLA was sitting in a tent when a group of Trinamul supporters hurled stones at the car. A few stones were also thrown at the MLA. “We had set up a tent 400 meters from the counting station. But Trinamul supporters, along with police, attacked us, accusing us of violating the rule,” the MLA said.
Ashok Nagar (North 24-Parganas)
ISF candidate Ismail Mondal was allegedly beaten up and dragged outside a counting station at Ashok Nagar in Habra 2 block after he raised objections to the malpractices by a section of officials and ruling party agents. Trinamul leaders said the ISF was creating a false narrative.
Tehatta (Nadia)
Trinamul MLA from Nadia’s Tehatta Tapas Saha was allegedly assaulted by central force personnel when he was celebrating the victory of party candidates in front of a counting station. Security personnel asked the jubilant MLA to clear the area, but he refused and jawans of the central force initiated a lathi charge, in which the MLA was injured.
English Bazar (Malda)
Anwarul Haque, husband of Trinamul’s panchayat samiti candidate Nur Nehar Biwi, allegedly ran away with a bunch of ballot papers while the counting was in progress at the Malda Zilla School. The Congress has lodged a complaint against Haque.
Kanksa (West Burdwan)
CPM activists allegedly attacked Trinamul workers with bows and arrows near the counting centre in West Burdwan's Kanksa on Tuesday. The violence started after Trinamul workers allegedly abused CPM activists at the centre. Police brought the situation under control.
