Stones were hurled at BJP candidate Babul Supriyo’s car after he stepped out of an Asansol booth on Monday alleging rigging by Trinamul supporters.

Barring this incident and altercations Supriyo had with Trinamul workers elsewhere over similar allegations, voting in Asansol passed off without major problems on Monday despite taut nerves in the run-up to the polls.

“Trinamul workers had driven our polling agent out of the booth after beating him up. When I went in, they tried to prevent me,” the singer-turned-leader said at the booth in the Barabani area after arguments with the presiding officer.

Supriyo alleged that Trinamul workers were intimidating voters and asking them to vote for their candidate. “I asked the presiding officer what he was doing and he apologised.”

Sources in the administration, however, said Supriyo had “intimidated” and “misbehaved” with the presiding officer, Kailash Singh. “We have lodged an FIR against him. We have also submitted a report to the Election Commission,” said a district official.

As Supriyo came out of the booth, Trinamul workers surrounded him and he had to be escorted by his guards to his SUV. As he got in, stones rained on the vehicle, smashing its rear windshield.

Supriyo alleged Trinamul workers were trying to confine him in Barabani so that they could “peacefully rig the polls” in other areas.

“I was trying to visit booths after getting reports about rigging and clashes but Trinamul workers prevented me,” he said and alleged several booths in Pandaveswar, Raniganj, Jamuria, Chittaranjan, Asansol and Andal were captured by “Trinamul-backed miscreants”.

Trinamul leaders denied the charges. “Trinamul does not need to rig polls. Supriyo will have to accept the mandate of people and stop blaming us,” said Jitendra Kumar Tiwari, Asansol mayor.
