Singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo was sworn in at the Bengal Assembly on Wednesday, nearly four weeks after being elected as an MLA from Ballygunge on April 16.

His oath was administered by deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee.

Supriyo’s swearing-in got complicated after governor Jagdeep Dhankhar appointed the deputy Speaker to administer the oath instead of Speaker Biman Banerjee.

Earlier, when parliamentary affairs department had written to Dhankhar to administer Supriyo’s oath, he had returned the file seeking clarifications on multiple issues.

Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee had expressed reluctance in executing the task instead of the Speaker. On Tuesday, parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee said that at the behest of the Speaker, the deputy Speaker had finally agreed.

Supriyo said he was keen to “focus on the days ahead”.

Supriyo said there was no point in recalling the past. “Let us focus on the days ahead.”

“I have been blessed by and received the cooperation of several senior people today (Wednesday). Let’s not think of those who didn’t,” he said.

Deputy Speaker Banerjee on Wednesday said the governor “wanted to create a rift between us but we are united”.

Speaker Banerjee didn’t attend the ceremony.
