Over 20 Trinamul workers were injured and several offices of the party were ransacked by alleged BJP activists in Jhargram and West Midnapore shortly after the sixth phase polling ended on Sunday.
The Trinamul block president of Binpur 1, Biswajit Das, was beaten up with rods on Sunday night.
Das was admitted to a local hospital. Trinamul also alleged that several party workers had fled homes at Satdhara village in Jhargram following threats from the BJP.
“Our workers either suffered injuries or fled their homes in the face of attacks by the BJP. We have asked police to stop this hooliganism,” said Sukumar Hansda, the chairman of Trinamul core committee in Jhargram.
Sources said the saffron brigade had targeted the ruling party’s workers in areas where they had allegedly tried to rig polls and disallowed BJP polling agents from entering booths.
Jhargram superintendent of police Arijit Sinha said: “We have taken appropriate measures to maintain peace. Police patrolling has been intensified.”
In West Midnapore’s Garbeta, altogether 12 Trinamul workers were injured when alleged BJP workers, armed with bows and arrows and bamboo sticks, attacked them on Sunday night. A Trinamul office was ransacked.
When the police arrived on Monday morning, villagers pelted them with stones. A police jeep was vandalised and three policemen were injured.
At Salboni, five Trinamul workers were injured when alleged BJP activists beat them up with bamboo sticks on Sunday night.
Later, one BJP worker was injured when Trinamul supporters retaliated.
The BJP has denied that its workers attacked Trinamul supporters.
“Trinamul had unleashed terror before and after the polls. Local people resisted them as police and central forces did nothing to control the situation,” said Arup Das, BJP general secretary in West Midnapore.
The West Midnapore superintendent of police, Alok Rajoria, said: “We have received several complaints and have started investigation.”
In East Midnapore’s Ramnagar, five Trinamul workers were injured when alleged BJP cadres attacked them with bamboo sticks after the polling. Two of the injured men were admitted to Contai subdivisional hospital.
