Three associates of Jayanth Singh, prime accused in the alleged attack on the mother-son duo in Ariadaha, were arrested on Tuesday in a separate case of alleged assault on a man and a woman with wickets and rods inside Taltala Club, Ariadaha, in 2021.
Several purported videos of crime — involving the alleged participation of Jayanth and his associates — have started surfacing now, prompting police to draw up separate cases against Jayanth and his associates and seek police custody, again, for questioning.
“Three men have been arrested after they were identified among a group of club members who were seen beating up a man and a woman mercilessly in a purported video inside the club. Three others, including Jayanth, who have been arrested in the earlier case of an alleged attack on the mother and son, are also allegedly involved in beating up this man and woman,” said Alok Rajoria, commissioner, Barrakpore police commissionerate.
A Trinamool Congress strongman from Kamarhati, Jayanth was arrested last week after he was named in the FIR on the case of assault on Sayandip Panja and his mother Bubun in Ariadaha on June 2. Sayandip’s father Bimal had lodged a complaint alleging Jayanth stood watching as his son and wife were mercilessly beaten up near his house.
A preliminary investigation by the police revealed the purported video of the attack on a man and a woman with a child inside the club dated back to sometime between February and March 2021.
“A resident of Ward 8 of the Kamarhati municipality lost a mobile phone and some of the residents suspected the man and the woman. They were called to the local club and thrashed with wickets and rods,” the police said.
“We have so far arrested six people in this case after drawing up a fresh case against Jayanth and his associates.”
On Wednesday, a woman in Ariadaha alleged that six months back, Jayanth’s associates had attacked her house late at night with bricks and rods because they wanted her son to stay out of the business of pulling down old houses to make way for new projects.
“I had lodged a police complaint against Jayanth and others armed with a video grab that I had shot from my rooftop. But no one was arrested,” she said.
Cops said they had stumbled upon another purported video of Jayanth’s men threatening a person with firearms, sometime in 2015. Officers have decided to verify the video.
