A woman was allegedly assaulted by the brother of the deputy chief of a Trinamul Congress-run panchayat in Mathabhanga subdivision of Cooch Behar on Thursday.
Police have arrested the accused and another person and initiated an investigation.
A video that went viral on Thursday showed a person resembling Ershad Ali, the brother of Hashem Ali Miah — the deputy chief of Hazrahat-II panchayat — shoving and assaulting a woman at Kandura in Mathabhanga.
Sources said an altercation took place between the families of Achma Bibi and Rashik Hussain over the construction of a wooden fence on Thursday. “The families already had differences over a plot of land. During the altercation, Ershad shoved a woman,” said a police source.
On Friday, both sides filed police complaints. Ershad and Kinaruddin Mia, a local resident, have been nabbed. The woman is under treatment at a hospital in Mathabhanga.
Hashem has supported his brother. “No one was assaulted. The woman had encroached on government land. She has filed a false complaint to implicate my brother,” he said.
