Asansol and Bankura police acted on a tip-off and raided Asansol station and a red light area in West Burdwan’s Kulti in connection with three firing incidents in the two districts and arrested three youths on Friday night.
Among the arrested trio is Rahul Sonkar, 20, who allegedly shot dead his sister on Thursday apparently for having a relationship with a boy against his wishes. The two others, Sohan Singh of Neamatpur and Pratap Das of Hirapur in West Burdwan, both in their mid-30, have criminal records.
Police said Rahul, who murdered his teenage sister, was found at Asansol station. Sohan and Pratap were found in a room at the Neamatpur red light area in Kulti late on Friday.
The police said that during interrogation Rahul had confessed that he procured the gun from Pratap to kill his sister.
The police said Pratap and Sohan were also involved in the September 5 firing in Bankura and another at a refuel station at Salanpur in West Burdwan on Thursday.
“We had information that the criminals were hiding in Asansol and Kulti. We found three persons who were involved in two firing incidents and a murder,” said Abhishek Modi, deputy commissioner of police (west).
On September 5, three persons, including a Trinamul trade union leader from East Burdwan who were travelling in a car with a murder accused released on bail from Bankura district correctional home, suffered bullet injuries when two bike-borne assailants shot at the car on a busy highway near Bankura town.
The police said Sohan and Pratap were among the shooters.
“We will interrogate them to know about other members of the gang and the motive,” said a Bankura police officer.
Asansol police also claimed that Sohan and Pratap were among the three youths spotted in the CCTV footage of Salanpur petrol pump on Thursday. The trio had refuelled their vehicle, but instead of paying had pulled out a gun and fired to scare the employees.
