The CBI on Monday arrested Sona Sheikh, the owner of the one-storey house from where seven charred bodies had been recovered in the March 21 Bogtui carnage, in connection with the murder of deputy chief of a Trinamul run gram panchayat Bhadu Sheikh, whose death is considered to have sparked off the violence that killed 10 persons.

Among the seven persons who were burnt alive, Rupali Biwi, was the wife of Sona.

Earlier the CBI had arrested 10 persons in connection with the murder of Bhadu and filed a chargesheet against four persons at Rampurhat court. Sources said, CBI arrested Sona early Monday morning from a hideout in Birbhum’s Suri town.

Sona was produced before a Rampurhat court that sent him in CBI custody for four days.“Sona Sheikh was one of the prime accused persons involved in the Bhadu Sheikh murder case. However, his name was not in the first chargesheet filed by the CBI. He was produced before the court and sent in CBI custody for four days,” said Surajit Sinha, the assistant public prosecutor in Rampurhat court.Bhadu, the deputy chief of Trinamul-run Barshal gram panchayat, was killed on March 21 evening when criminals hurled crude bombs at him while he was talking over a phone beside National Highway 14.

After his murder, a group of around 70-80 goons raided Bogtui village and set fire to multiple houses, including the house of Sona. The CBI has so far arrested 35 people in connection with the Bogtui carnage and had filed a chargesheet.Sources said all seven persons who were burnt alive were relatives of Sona and he had fled home after Bhadu’s family members lodged a complaint against him and eight others.
