A Rouse Avenue court in New Delhi on Tuesday sent Birbhum’s Trinamul Congress chief Anubrata Mondal to judicial custody till April 3 in the cattle-smuggling case.

Mondal will be lodged at Tihar jail during this period.

Mondal was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on August 11 last year in the same case and was later taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate. The ED recently flew him to Delhi for further investigation.

Tuesday’s order was pronounced by special judge Raghubir Singh. Mondal will not be allowed to carry his medicines or other belongings to the jail. However, medical assistance to the Trinamul leader has been assured by the ED. The same court has sent Mondal’s bodyguard Saigal Hossain and chartered accountant Manish Kothari to Tihar.

Mondal is the fourth accused — after Hossain, Kothari, and Emanul Haque — to be sent to Tihar in the cattle smuggling case.

Kothari was also sent to Tihar for 14 days on Tuesday.

The Enforcement Directorate has summoned 12 others in connection with this case. The list includes Mondal’s daughter Sukanya Mondal, her chauffeur Tufan Mridha, a youth Trinamul leader from Birbhum Kripamay Ghosh, businessmen Moloy Pit and Rajib Bhattacharya, and Trinamul’s Bolpur organiser Tapas Mandal among others.
