Anubrata Mondal, the Birbhum district president of the Trinamul Congress, was admitted to SSKM Hospital here on Wednesday morning, because of which he couldn’t appear before the CBI in connection with a cattle smuggling case.
The Trinamul strongman was on his way to meet CBI officers. Mondal had left his Chinar Park residence in Newtown in the morning and complained of shortness of breath and pain while on his way. The Trinamul leader was admitted to the Woodburn ward of SSKM Hospital.
Later in the day, Mondal’s lawyer met CBI officers at Nizam Palace — barely a kilometre away from the hospital — and submitted to them a plea on behalf of Mondal requesting a four-week time before he could appear for questioning.
The CBI officers said they would seek a medical report on Mondal’s health and subsequently engage an independent team of doctors to ascertain whether the ailments require hospitalisation and for how long.
In the letter addressed to the CBI’s deputy superintendent of police, Sushanta Bhattacharya, Mondal said the sleuths could visit him at the hospital “subject to certification by the concerned doctors”. The hospital has set up a team of doctors to monitor Mondal’s health condition.
