Murdered student-activist Anis Khan’s body was exhumed for a second round of post-mortem on Monday afternoon in the presence of a district judge.

His family members and villagers of Sarada Dakshin Khanpara, where the 28-year-old lived and was killed, had objected to the body being exhumed on Saturday despite an order by the Calcutta High Court.

On Monday, the family members raised no objections when members of the special investigation team went to exhume the body accompanied with a block medical officer.

The slain student-activist’s father, Salaam Khan, could not attend the proceedings. Instead, his elder son Sabir and one of his nephew’s went to the burial ground.

SIT members had arrived at 8am at the Khan residence to have another round of talks to convince the father, who demanded the proceedings be held under the watch of a district judge.

Around 12.30 pm, the process was completed.

Anis was found dead after falling from the roof soon after a uniformed cop and three civic police volunteers visited their house well after midnight on February 18. The SIT has arrested a home guard and a civic police volunteer in connection with the murder, while the inspector-in-charge of the local Amta police station has been sent on indefinite leave. The family has demanded a CBI probe into the murder, which the state government is yet to accept.

Anis's family members had objected to the presence of a large police contingent on Saturday to exhume the body and the villagers had joined the family to stop the police from carrying out the court’s order. The West Bengal police had blamed the Opposition parties of fanning trouble to prevent them from carrying on with the probe.
