The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the murder of 28-year old student-activist Anis Khan, arrested two persons on Wednesday.

The two apprehended were identified as civic volunteer Pritam Bhattacharya and home guard Kashinath Bera, who was sacked on Tuesday. However, it is still to be ascertained whether the two are directly linked to the murder or not.

State director general of police Manoj Malviya said the SIT will trace down the real culprits within the stipulated 15 days as instructed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Malviya added the investigators are treating the case as a "murder case" and are keen on a second post mortem in the presence of a magistrate.

According to police sources, on Friday past midnight, a response team (RT) van from the local police station was spotted near Khan's residence at Sarada Dakshin Khanpara in Amta.

"Four other policemen are being interrogated, while two others have been kept under observation," said a senior police officer. The interrogation is being carried out at the state CID headquarters at Bhabani Bhawan.

Cops suspect while four people linked to police may have gone to Khan's house, there could be more involved in the conspiracy. The motive behind the murder is yet to be established.

Family members of the slain student leader have been claiming since day one that one uniformed policeman and three in the guise of civic volunteers had forcibly entered their house looking for Khan around 1 am.

The Amta and neighbouring Bagnan police stations had denied sending any team to the locality on that fateful night. Sources added three other civic police volunteers who were missing since the fatal Friday night are also being tracked. All four were attached with the Amta Police Station.

Khan had been assaulted previously four years ago and his house came under attack from the local Trinamul leadership as he had campaigned extensively for the Left-Congress-ISF alliance in the area in the 2021 Assembly eletions.

According to sources, the RT van had stopped at the end of the pucca road in the village and the occupants walked up to the under construction house of the Khans. One of the accused in the case is the son of a Trinamul upapradhan in Raspur panchayat run by the ruling party.

The deceased's members have all along been demanding for a CBI probe in the case. The victim's father Salam Khan claimed on Wednesday that the family had received a call threatening them for demanding a CBI probe.

"We don't know who made the call. We were threatened with dire consequences if we kept on pressing for a CBI probe," said the elder Khan.

A police team was sent to the village but the family members refused to allow them to exhume the body, following which Malviya issued a fresh appeal.
