Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar has been summoned by Union home minister Amit Shah for a meeting on Thursday.
According to sources in the party, Majumdar received a call from Shah’s office on Wednesday, asking the Balurghat MP to cancel his plan to return to Calcutta on Wednesday.
Majumdar, who is now attending the winter session of Parliament in Delhi, was scheduled to call on BJP workers allegedly attacked by Trinamul Congress members at Diamond Harbour on Wednesday evening.
“Only Amitji can say what he wants to talk about. However, we believe the meeting will primarily be on organisational issues. The law and order situation in Bengal as well as the upcoming rural polls might also feature in the meeting,” a source close to Majumdar said.
In the recent past, the rift between Majumdar and the leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has widened. Though the two leaders are never seen fighting it out in public, it is an open secret in the BJP that Adhikari’s rapport with Delhi leaders, especially Shah, did not go down well with Majumdar.
The rift between the two widened with Majumdar cancelling the appointment of five mandal presidents in Haldia and Moyna Assembly constituencies. The appointments had been made with Adhikari’s consent.
Thursday’s meeting is seen in the backdrop of the rift as Shah is aware that the party cannot go to the forthcoming polls with a divided house and for a good electoral performance he needs both Majumdar and Adhikari, as well as the likes of national vice-president Dilip Ghosh. While Adhikari has a larger mass connection in Bengal and is currently the most popular saffron leader in the state, Majumdar represents north Bengal where the party has a stronger organisation.
It is expected that Shah will instruct Majumdar to mend internal differences and go ahead as a team. He is also likely to take a stock of the party’s organisational strength. The BJP is still striving to strengthen its organisation in large parts of central and southern Bengal.
Sources said Majumdar would also likely to bring up the issue of the “breakdown of law and order in the state” with the Union home minister.
“Sukantada had first demanded an NIA probe into the Bhupatinagar blast in East Midnapore. He will bring up the issue of breakdown of law and order in Bengal during the meeting,” a BJP MP said.
Bengal BJP has already submitted a 63-page long document with governor CV Ananda Bose, listing the issues of law and order and corruption in the state. The document includes the issue of non-payment of DA to state government employees and teacher recruitment scams. Majumdar wants to talk about all these issues, the source said.
Both Majumdar and Adhikari have said something big is going to happen in December. Adhikari has gone ahead to claim that “the biggest thief in Bengal” will be arrested this month.
