Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Friday night lodged a complaint with Hare Street police station through an email against chief minister Mamata Banerjee for her threat to arrest eight BJP leaders in retaliation to the arrest of four of her party MLAs.

Adhikari has requested the police to lodge an FIR on the basis of his complaint. “There should be a specific case under specific sections (of the Indian Penal Code) for her threats. I have lodged a complaint with Hare Street police station. But they will not do it (register a case). After three days, I will move the ACJM (additional chief judicial magistrate) court. Later, if need be, I will approach Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court,” the BJP leader said.

“Such audacious comments by Mamata Banerjee will be her last such comment. I will fight to stop this type of culture as the leader of the Opposition,” Adhikari said on Saturday.

Adhikari had on Thursday declared his intention to lodge a police complaint after Mamata, at a meeting with Trinamul workers at Netaji Indoor Stadium, threatened to arrest eight from the BJP in retaliation to the arrest of four Trinamul MLAs by central agencies.

“They have jailed four of our MLAs. They are trying to reduce our number (of MLAs) through such moves. If they send four of our MLAs to jail... we vow on behalf of our party to arrest eight of their (BJP) people,” Mamata said.

Former education minister Partha Chatterjee, Trinamul MLA from Murshidabad’s Burwan Jiban Krishna Saha and MLA from Nadia’s Palashipara Manik Bhattacharya are in jail in connection with the alleged cash-for-schoolteachers’ job scam. Former food and current forest minister Jyotipriya Mallick is in custody in connection with the alleged PDS scam. Trinamul leader Anubrata Mondal is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail for his alleged connection with cattle smuggling.

“That being a political leader, Head of the Ministry of Home in the state of West Bengal as well as the Hon’ble chief minister of West Bengal, when such person delivers a speech of such provocative nature indicative towards me and the members of my political party criminally intimidating us with dire consequences and false charges leading to capital punishment under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (murder),” Adhikari wrote in his complaint.

“In view of such circumstances, I request your good office to bring such perpetrators of crime to justice upon registering an FIR against the aforesaid accused persons. Kindly treat this letter of complaint for purpose of registration of an FIR,” the complaint added.

Trinamul leaders said Adhikari’s complaint was nothing but a “panic reaction”.

“This is a panic reaction from Suvendu Adhikari as he knows he is an accused in several criminal cases. The CBI should arrest him first in connection with scams like Narada and Saradha,” said Trinamul’s Kunal Ghosh.
