Political parties across the spectrum mourned the passing of former Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. The octogenarian, who died on Thursday morning at his residence, was the seventh chief minister of Bengal and the last to hold the position from the Left Front.
As the news of Bhattacharjee's news broke, CPM leaders, including state secretary Md. Salim, Suryakanta Misra, Biman Bose, Rabin Deb and Srijan Bhattacharya, rushed to the Palm Avenue residence of the former chief minister.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Salim said: "It's a loss. He had an unparalleled personality that is very rare to find in today's politics. He was aggressively secular, incorruptible and led a simple life. There was no difference between his works and his words. He had a dream for the younger generation of Bengal. It's a huge loss that cannot be compensated".
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who played an instrumental role in the Singur and Nandigram movements that led to the ouster of the Left Front government from the state, repented his loss.
"He is such a political personality to whom honesty was the last word. As a political person of the opposite camp I have occasionally protested against his policies and decisions but today I believe we should not have gone against industrialisation in Singur and Nandigram. He can be an idol for the younger generation who had spent his entire life in a small flat," Chowdhury said.
Trinamool Congress MP and All Indian general secretary of the party Abhishek Banerjee posted on his X handle: "I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and admirers during this difficult time. May they draw strength in this time of sorrow. Om Shanti!”
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar in his message said: "The death of Buddhadeb Bhattacharya is a huge loss not only for Bengal but the country as well. We might have political differences with him but as a human being and an honest politician, he will always be respected".
A statement from Raj Bhavan said: “HG (Honourable Governor) has expressed his grief at the passing away of former Chief Minister of West Bengal Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. HG prays ALMIGHTY gives the departed leader’s family and well-wishers the strength to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude.”
