The city has received more than 33mm of rain in the first five days of July but the seasonal monsoon deficit for the city stands at 66 per cent, according to the Met office.

The deficit is mainly because of the poor rainfall in June.

The highest the city has received so far this month is 18.1mm on July 1. In comparison, the city received 94mm in the whole of June.

Usually, the city receives 299mm of rain in June.

It is unlikely that the city will receive heavy rain in the next few days, a Met official said.

On Saturday, the rain in Calcutta was skewed. Till 8.30pm, Dum Dum received 13.46mm, Behala 13.2mm, Utladanga 9.65mm and Ballygunge 8.38mm.

The city recorded a maximum temperature of 31.9 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal. Even if the rainfall is isolated and light, the sky is likely to remain cloudy for the next couple of days and the temperature is unlikely to shoot up, the official said.

A cyclonic circulation and a trough of low pressure over Gangetic Bengal have led to moderate rain in Calcutta and surrounding areas in south Bengal. “The systems are now moving up towards Bihar,” the official said.

As a result, the western districts of Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, Murshidabad, Nadia and Birbhum are likely to receive heavy rainfall (above 60mm) for the next couple of days. The north Bengal districts, too, are expected to receive heavy rain from Monday as the systems move up.

In Calcutta, the amount of rainfall is expected to dip in the second half of Sunday, another Met official said. “There will be light and scattered rain in Calcutta and south Bengal.”
