Atanu Saha, a doctor whose daughter and son were Sengupta’s students, said: “He taught my children math for over two years. He was returning home when the accident happened.”

Saha said Sengupta, a resident of Santoshpur, did his electrical engineering from Jadavpur University. He is survived by his mother and younger brother.

Residents of the complex expressed concern over the safety of the elderly residents who walk in the evening or the children who play on the roads inside the housing complex.

Panchasayar police station has drawn up a case based on a complaint by Sengupta’s brother Pradipta. “A case has been started against Shankha Subhra Bhattacharjee under sections dealing with rash and negligent act causing death of a person, not amounting to culpable homicide, rash and negligent driving, causing grievous hurt and causing mischief,” an officer said.

When contacted, Pradipta said he was “not in a position to talk”.

A resident of the complex who said he witnessed the accident told this newspaper: “It was around 8pm... when I saw an elderly man walking inside the complex. A car suddenly sped past mine and crashed into a concrete structure on the pavement and came to a halt a few metres away. The elderly man was nowhere to be seen.”

Several evening walkers rushed to the spot and saw the elderly man lying in a roadside bush, severely injured.

“A few young men jumped out of the car and came running towards the crash site. I took the elderly man to Peerless Hospital,” said the Tower II resident.

Officials at the hospital said Sengupta had been bleeding from the nose when he was taken there. He suffered multiple injuries.

“He died on Sunday night,” said an official.

Peerless officials said Bhattacharjee, too, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday night with a complaint of “an episode of blackout”. He was discharged on Tuesday.

No one was arrested till late on Wednesday.
