A 50-year-old man died on Thursday after an autorickshaw he was travelling in rammed into a stationary car on Diamond Harbour Road. Nitya Majumdar was on his way to a hospital in his son’s autorickshaw when the accident occurred. There were two more passengers in the vehicle. Police have started a case of rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence against the driver and arrested him.
Police attacked in Burdwan
Two police men and a civic volunteer were allegedly assaulted during a raid on a gambling den in East Burdwan’s Mathura village on Wednesday night. A police team led by two assistant sub-inspectors had raided the gambling den in a rural fair. The police were allegedly hit with rods and sticks by the gamblers. The injured policemen and the civic volunteer were admitted to a Calcutta hospital.
Bullets seized
The BSF and police jointly raided a house at Aiho near Habibpur in Malda on Thursday and seized 10 live bullets and 50 bottles of India-made foreign liquor.
Boy goes home from hospital
Debangshu Bhakat, 6, who was admitted to SSKM Hospital after a pool car he was travelling in met with an accident at Polba in Hooghly last week, was discharged on Thursday. Debangshu, a resident of Hooghly district, had suffered fractures and a haemorrhage.
Life term
The additional district and sessions judge in Krishnagar, Manas Kumar Bose, on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for burning to death a homemaker. The court found Samaresh Biswas of Krishnaganj-Taraknagar guilty of killing his neighbour, Puja Kirtania, on the night of November 8, 2017. Samaresh was having an affair with Puja in the absence of her husband who used to work in Pune, sources said. “Puja had decided to end the affair, which angered Samaresh,” said a source. Puja had been admitted to the Nadia district hospital with burns and later shifted to JNM Hospital, where she died on November 18. Public prosecutor Nasiruddin Ahmed said on Thursday that Puja had named Samaresh in her dying statement.
Civic project
The Calcutta Municipal Corporation would build a reservoir-cum-booster pumping station of 27-lakh-litre capacity on Middle Road in Santoshpur, civic officials said. The proposed station has received approval from the corporation, the officials said.
Community hall
A community hall will be inaugurated at New Alipore Market on March 7, officials of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation said. Mayor Firhad Hakim will be present on the occasion.
Court on permission for CU course
A Calcutta High Court order has made it mandatory for Calcutta University to obtain approval of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) for a one-year diploma course in rehabilitation psychology that it had been offering without permission.
Fifty-odd students had taken admission to the course offered by the university’s applied psychology department in 2016.They completed the course successfully but none of them was issued pass certificates in 2017 because the RCI had withdrawn its approval for the course.
Presi VC
Presidency University vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia said on Thursday that she and senior officials of the university, including the registrar, would not enter the College Street campus until students lift the indefinite sit-in that began last month.
Lohia said they would work from the university’s New Town campus or, if needed, from home.
