Jangipur police on Thursday arrested five more suspects in connection with the Farakka bank robbery that had taken place on April 13.
Special teams had been conducting operations since the robbery. On Thursday, they nabbed two persons from Jharkhand and three from Bihar and seized Rs 30 lakh, bringing the total recovered amount to Rs 84 lakh.
The total number of arrested persons has reached eight. Around Rs 1.1crore had been looted.
Bagha Baharia, 30, and Rugal Singh, 38, were arrested from Dupipara and Hiranpur, respectively, in Jharkhand on Thursday. Bajrang Tampi, 30, Bijoy Tampi, 40, and Sankar Shah, 52, were arrested from Bhagalpur in Bihar.
An SUV and two motorcycles used in the robbery were also seized. “The mastermind, Kanhaiya, is still on the run.… I have recommended the names of officers who arrested the robbers for governmental bravery awards,” said police superintendent (Jangipur), Bholanath Pandey.
The five arrested men were produced in the Jangipur additional chief judicial magistrate’s court and remanded in police custody for two weeks.
Police sources said interrogations of the three suspects nabbed shortly after the incident on April 13 had led to clues regarding the other suspects’ whereabouts.
