5 held on border for infiltration attempt

Three Bangladeshis and two Indians were intercepted by the Border Security Force (BSF) at different locations of the India-Bangladesh border in north Bengal on Wednesday for allegedly trying to enter India illegally.

Sources said troops of 137 battalion of the BSF posted at Chakgopal border outpost in South Dinajpur district had caught Moloy Kumar Datta, a resident of Dinajpur district of Bangladesh, his wife, daughter and an Indian woman, who is from Malda district, while they were illegally crossing the border to enter India from Bangladesh.

All of them have been handed over to Hilli police. In another incident, personnel of 61 battalion of the force posted at Hilli 2 border outpost of the same district nabbed Anowar Mondal, a resident of Gossaipur under Hilli police station, while he was carrying cough syrup bottles on a motorcycle and was about to smuggle those into Bangladesh.

The BSF also carried out anti-smuggling drives in different locations and seized contraband items, including cattle, cough syrups and tablets. The cost of the seized items is Rs 5.18 lakh.

Job racket

Four persons, including a father and son, were arrested by the Siliguri Metropolitan Police on Wednesday for allegedly being involved in a fake job racket.
