42-year-old land dealer shot in Cooch Behar

A 42-year-old land dealer in Cooch Behar district was gunned down by unidentified assailants on Sunday night.

Sources said Sushil Chandra Das, a resident of Kharija-Kakribari under Pundibari police station on the outskirts of Cooch Behar town, was shot while he was crossing Naruddiner More in Mahishbathan on NH31.

Some bystanders rushed him to a private nursing home. From there, he was referred to MJN Medical College and Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

During a preliminary probe, the police learned that Das was associated with land dealings.

“We have initiated a probe and are waiting for the post-mortem report,” said Kumar Sunny Raj, the additional superintendent of police (headquarters), on Monday.

Found hanging

A youth in his late 20s was found hanging in a house in Siliguri's Dabgram on Monday morning.

Residents of Pritilata Road, under ward 23, spotted the body hanging from the ventilator of the house. The body had bloody marks.

Police were informed. A team from Siliguri police station recovered the body. Police suspect murder. The post-mortem report is awaited.

The deceased, sources said, is yet to be identified.

Intoxicants seized

A team from Pradhannagar police station in Siliguri arrested two persons with cough syrup bottles and brown sugar (a derivative of heroin) from Dagapur on the northern outskirts of the city on Sunday,

Hamirul Sheikh of Murshidabad and Aviraj Singh of Champasari were found with around 50 cough syrup bottles and around 50 grams of the narcotic, police sources said.
