Four Bangladeshis, including a woman, were arrested from two different locations of north Bengal in the past 24 hours on charges of infiltration.
In Cooch Behar district, troops of the 98 battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) intercepted three Bangladeshis from Jaliatary More of Mekhliganj on Wednesday while they were heading towards Siliguri.
The trio were identified as Safikul Islam of Bagerhat district and Abdul Karim Islam and Asmat Ali, both residents of Kurigram district of the neighbouring country.
“Ali is a tout who used to help people illegally cross the India-Bangladesh border,” said a source. The trio have been handed over to Mekhliganj police.
On Tuesday, troops of the 61 battalion of the force posted in South Dinajpur district arrested a Bangladeshi woman, who hails from Faridpur district in Bangladesh, on charges of infiltration. She was handed over to Hilli police.
The BSF also carried out raids on Tuesday and Wednesday in different areas of north Bengal near the Indo-Bangla border and seized a number of contraband items including cattle and cough syrup bottles.
The cost of the seized items is Rs 7.76 lakh.
In another incident, forest guards posted in Jaldapara National Park intercepted two persons on Wednesday and recovered two kilos of cannabis from them.
Tapash Roy and Ranjan Barman, both residents of Salkumarhat of Alipurduar district, were moving through the national park on a motorcycle. They were on their way to Madarihat.
The duo were later handed over to Sonapur police.
