Body cameras were provided to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel in Malda Town station under Eastern Railway on Wednesday for better surveillance.
Vikas Chaube, the divisional railway manager of Malda division, said that 37 such cameras were provided to the personnel posted in the division.
“The RPF will use the cameras while performing duties on the station premises, and also while they are on duty in running trains. All these cameras are made in India and can record constantly for five hours with a standby time of eight hours,” Chaube said.
The DRM said these cameras had multiple benefits.
“There can be variation in human alertness, but the cameras can constantly record the situation unerringly. In some cases, the recording can help in an investigation and footage can act as evidence. Soon, some more cameras will reach the division so that every RPF personnel can have one camera,” he added.
Around 125 RPF personnel are posted in Malda Town station.
There is also a plan to introduce such cameras for traveling ticket examiners (TTEs), said sources.
“These cameras will also deter mischief-makers who will restrain themselves if they know their activities are being recorded,” a railway official said.
