A 35-year-old motorcyclist was killed after he crashed into a stationary goods vehicle in Sonarpur on the city's southern fringe around 4am on Saturday.
He was not wearing a helmet even though there was one attached to the bike, police said.
The deceased, Azad Sheikh, featured in a small role in Bengali film Mirza, which released in April.
The front wheel of the two-wheeler came off in the impact of the collision and the bike's front portion was damaged beyond repair, the police said.
Azad was rescued from the accident site at Arapanch, Sonarpur, and taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. The injuries on his head were fatal, doctors told the cops.
"We are trying to recover CCTV footage. But it appears that the deceased drove at a very high speed probably because the road was empty so early in the morning. The goods vehicle was parked on the roadside and there was no one inside the driver's cabin," said an officer.
The police said family members told them Azad, who had a small business, was passionate about acting and often sought acting opportunities even if it meant not being able to attend to his business.
His wife had died while giving birth to their son, the police said. The family had been gearing up to celebrate the child's 10th birthday on May 20, the cops said.
Sonarpur witnessed a fatal accident in March when a two-wheeler collided with a moving truck leaving two dead. The accident occurred early in the morning when traffic was comparatively low, police said.
"We are trying to identify accident-prone spots on Sonapur Road... Despite awareness drives and prosecution against helmetless driving, some motorcyclists still choose to flout rules," the officer said.
