In a horrifying incident, a 32-year-old homemaker from Nandigram in East Midnapore was brutally assaulted twice by neighbours as she objected to the spillage of their drained water into her courtyard.
The attackers with alleged ties with BJP beat the woman, stripped and then abandoned her 300 meters away from home after a rape attempt.
The initial assault occurred on August 15 when the victim lodged a police complaint.
Following this, Tapas Das, one of the neighbours, was arrested. Das is a booth committee president of the BJP.
However, in an act of retaliation, relatives of the arrested person broke into her home on Friday night, severely beat up her and dragged her away from home before leaving her in a nearly naked state.
Local residents informed the police who rescued the woman. Her teenage daughter was also assaulted when she tried to protect her and record the incident on her phone, which was snatched by the assailants.
The woman, the wife of a migrant labourer, lives with her minor daughter and son.
Both the attacks occurred in the absence of her husband, who works in Chennai.
On Saturday morning, he returned home and lodged a fresh complaint with the Nandigram police station against seven accused, all of whom are BJP associates, local sources said.
The traumatised woman, the mother of two children, suffering from multiple injuries, was admitted to the Nandigram super specialty hospital.
The victim's husband said: "After knowing about the August 15 attack I took a train to return home. But before I could reach she was attacked again. I never imagined that a dispute over drain water could take such a turn. The attackers ruthlessly tortured my wife. They did not even spare my two children and a pet dog who also suffered serious injuries."
The incident has sparked political outrage with Trinamool Congress leadership condemning the BJP's role.
The victim's husband acknowledged that he was a Trinamool supporter, but not an activist.
However, local sources said that the initial feud between the two neighbouring families that began over the passing of drain water turned into a political fight as the local BJP leadership was insisting they join the saffron party.
Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh in a post on his x handle held BJP accountable for the attack.
However, BJP's Nandigram leader and Tamluk organizational district secretary Meghnad Pal denied the allegations. "It was a dispute between two neighbouring families without any political connection. Trinamool has been maliciously involving VIP only to divert attention from the ongoing agitation over the rape and murder of a lady doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Meanwhile, Nandigram police have confirmed that an investigation was underway. The accused persons are currently absconding and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend them.
