Three men have been convicted for teasing and harassing a woman boxer near Ekbalpore last June and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by an Alipore court on Tuesday.

The woman was riding her scooter to work and had stopped at a signal at the crossing of Bhukailash Road and Remount Road, when she was teased and physically harassed by three men.

The boxer lodged a complaint with South Port police station. The three were arrested and a chargesheet was filed against them in 11 days.

Police had submitted the chargesheet under sections 354 (outrage of modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (outrage of women through words and gestures) and 114 (abettor is present when offence is committed) of the Indian Penal Code. IPC section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) was added later.

“Custody trial was conducted and none of the accused was granted bail during the trial,” public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal said.
