Three members of a club in Howrah’s Domjur were arrested on Sunday for allegedly beating up the owner of a mineral water manufacturing unit and his guard after he refused to pay them Rs 1 crore.

Gopinath Patro, a member of the club, had been arrested on Sunday following a complaint lodged by Manas Roy, the owner of the mineral water plant, with Domjur police station. Police did not reveal the names of the accused rounded up on Sunday.

“We tracked down the three members of the club after questioning Patro. They are seen roughing up Roy and his guard Gopal Ghosh, who suffered head injuries, on footage of CCTV cameras,” an investigating officer said.

“Several others were also involved. We are trying to track them down. Raids are on.”

Roy said around 30 men had turned up at his factory in Domjur around 10pm on Friday and demanded Rs 1 crore.

“This is not the first time they were asking for money. In fact, I have paid them on at least five occasions. Their demand would usually range between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, but when they asked for Rs 1 crore, it was way beyond my means,” Roy had told Metro on Saturday.

When Roy refused to pay, one of the men pushed him, snatched his phone and smashed it and tore away his gold chain.

His guard Ghosh rushed to his rescue only to be pinned down to the ground and hit hard with a sharp weapon and a rod.
