Police in Cooch Behar arrested three persons on Monday night, two in connection with a bike theft and the third on a complaint related to cheating.
Sources said that last Sunday, Biswajit Deb, of Dauaguri village under Kotwali police station of the district, was returning home on his motorcycle. As he neared the Baburhat bridge, three-four persons in two cars intercepted him, he said. They assaulted him, snatched his cell phone and purse, and took away the bike.
This made them file a complaint with police on Monday.
Police acted on the complaint and initiated a probe. Soon, the police identified a quartet. They launched a search and arrested two persons, Biswadip Kundu and Sourav Mitra, who are from different locations on the outskirts of Cooch Behar town. The police have also recovered the stolen motorcycle. Search is on for two others.
In another incident, Pintu Sarkar, a resident of Mistripara, was arrested by Kotwali police on Monday.
Police sources said that Soma Guha Roy of New Town area of Cooch Behar had filed a complaint on Sunday that on January 14. Pintu and another person had been to their area and taken Rs 500 from her and other neighbours, along with some documents, promising free LPG connections under the central Ujjwala scheme.
“None got any such connection,” said a police officer.
During probe, police found out that Pintu had used the identity proofs to obtain loans from different institutions.
PF arrest
Alipurduar police arrested a director of a tea estate on Monday night for not depositing provident funds of employees. SP Y. Raghuvamshi said they arrested Amit Agarwal, a director of Demdima tea estate as a complaint was filed that he is yet to deposit Rs 5.5 crore as the provident fund of his employees with the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation. He was produced in court on Tuesday and been sent to police custody for 10 days.
Demdima is located on the outskirts of Birpara, in Madarihat block of Alipurduar district.
Sources said in February 2019, Agarwal took the charge of the tea state and since then, he has not deposited the provident fund of the workers. On June 15 this year, another company took over the garden.
“A senior official of EPFO based in Jalpaiguri had filed a complaint against him at Birpara police station,” said a source.
