Sources have said there are two lobbies at Uttamasha Club in ward 5 of Balurghat.

“During Durga Puja celebrations on Monday, some youths were enjoying themselves. At that time, Rudra Biswas, a member of the club, tossed a glass bottle at the residence of Ramshankar Saha, who is also associated with the club,” said a source.

Saha’s house is near the club. The incident led to an altercation between the members of the two groups. Local people intervened and brought the situation under control.

Saha’s wife filed a complaint at Balurghat police station on Tuesday, accusing Rudra of attacking their house.

On Wednesday morning, Rudra’s body was found in the Atreyee river near Sahebkachari in Balurghat. He had been missing since Tuesday afternoon.

Ranjit, Rudra’s father, alleged some members of the club had reached their house on Tuesday evening and issued a warning against his son. “We suspect those who intimidated my son have murdered him and dumped his body in the river. The police should find out the truth and arrest all those who are responsible for his death,” said Ranjit.

Rudra, local people said, used to run an e-rickshaw.

The club authorities said there were no differences among the members.

Balurghat municipal chairman Ashok Kumar Mitra visited the area on Wednesday and urged the residents to maintain peace.

The police have detained one person.
