A 25-year-old nurse working at a private nursing home here was allegedly found hanging on Friday night in a rented accommodation where she stayed with some of her colleagues.

Her neighbours alleged that her colleagues and authorities of the private clinic tried to take away her body without informing the police.

Neighbours stopped them from taking away the body and called up the police who rushed to the spot.

Sources said Archana Thapa, who was from Darjeeling, had been working at the private nursing home in Khalpara of Siliguri.

She stayed at a rented apartment in Milanpally, Siliguri ward 25, with some nurses working at the same healthcare establishment.

On Friday, some of her colleagues "spotted Archana hanging in the washroom of the accommodation", said a source. This made them call up the nursing home authorities. An ambulance soon reached the spot.

Jayanta Saha, the local councillor, said: “Some residents informed me about the incident and alleged that attempts were being made to take away the body without informing the police. They stopped the attempt as I went to the spot.”

Soon, teams from the Khalpara police outpost and Siliguri police station reached the location. They recovered the body and it was sent to North Bengal Medical College & Hospital (NBMCH) for post-mortem.

Saha said he knew nothing about the tenants.

“I appeal to all residents of my ward to provide details of their tenants to the local police station and my office. We are trying to find out if, in the name of tenancy, dwelling units in apartments are being provided as hostels without any details about boarders,” he added.

Archana's family members and relatives reached the NBMCH on Saturday to take away her body.

“We want the police to find out what has led to the incident. We don't believe that Archana took her own life,” said one of her relatives.
