The victim, Kishan Kumhar, was a resident of Kurti tea estate which is located under the jurisdiction of Nagrakata police station. While he had gone to the washroom on Sunday night, a group of local youths reached his home looking for him.

“Youths found him in the washroom. They broke open the door, dragged him outside and beat him indiscriminately with rods and sticks. Kumhar’s family members tried to resist the attack but couldn’t save him. They rushed him to the rural hospital in Nagrakata where doctors pronounced him dead,” said a source. Kumhar, sources said, is survived by his mother, wife and a child.

After the incident, his family members filed a complaint against the attackers and by Monday afternoon, police nabbed five of them.

One of the accused men said Kumhar used to tease his sister. “We married her off and still, Kumhar would visit her in-laws’ place and disturb my sister. We had warned him several times but he didn’t listen.”

A police officer said: “We are searching for another person who was involved in the crime.”
