Police have seized over 2,200 pre-activated SIM cards from the house of a fraudster in the Sagardighi area of the neighbouring Murshidabad district.

Shaw Amit Kumar, the additional superintendent of police (headquarters), on Tuesday said that 2,255 pre-activated SIM cards were seized from the house of Abdul Alim, who was arrested in connection with siphoning around Rs 4 lakh from a Malda resident. “We are trying to know how Alim managed to obtain so many cards and suspect that he used to sell those cards to people involved in illegal and criminal activities against exorbitant activities,” the SP added.

Sources said on February 7, a case was registered at the cybercrime police station here by Arghya Roy Chowdhury, a Malda resident. He had alleged that Rs 3.78 lakh was siphoned from his account by cyber fraudsters. The police initiated a probe and Alim was arrested on May 23.

“As we interrogated him, he revealed that he is in possession of SIM cards. We, however, had no inkling that so many cards were with him,” said an officer.

“During investigation, we have come to know that fake documents were used for issuing the SIM cards. Those might have been sold to a cyber fraud racket against exorbitant prices,” the official added.

In another incident, Harischandrapur police in Malda arrested two persons after firearms and ammunition were seized from them on Monday.

Sahidul Karim and Hasanuzzaman were arrested with an improvised pipe gun, an improvised pistol, two rounds of live bullets and a magazine with four more live bullets.
