A 22-year-old Congress worker, Akmal Sheikh, was hacked to death in Malda allegedly by Trinamool supporters, which is being attributed to a fallout of the Lok Sabha election result.

Family members of Akmal, who stay in Gopalpur panchayat area in Manikchak block, said they were all being threatened by TMC area president Naser Sheikh and his henchmen after the June 4 results.

Manikchak falls under the Dakshin Maldaha Lok Sabha constituency which the Congress won. Manikchak has a Trinamool MLA, Sabitri Mitra. The BJP led in this segment and the Congress came second.

Akmal’s relatives alleged that while the youth was returning home on Saturday 9pm, he was taken to a mango orchard at Balutola village where alleged TMC-backed hooligans hit him in his legs with sharp weapons repeatedly.

“He was left there in a
critical condition. Later, he was discovered by some
people and rushed to the Malda Medical College and Hospital where he died,” a family member said.

Isha Khan Choudhury, the newly elected Congress MP, said: “The Congress worker was murdered by the area TMC president Naser Sheikh and his group. Naser has
had 25 FIRs against him
but the police have taken
no action. Partha Sarathi Haldar, the inspector in charge
of Manikchak, has been playing a biased role. He is arresting Congress leaders and workers while the accused
are roaming freely. The IC has lost the right to serve the people and should be transferred immediately.”

He warned if the accused were not arrested immediately, Congress would launch an agitation in Manikchak.

District Congress president A.H. Khan Choudhury, too, wrote a letter to the Election Commission of India and the Malda SP, demanding action against the IC.

The police said that a probe had started.
