The forensic examination of the Honda City involved in an alleged hit-and-run on the Bypass on Sunday that killed a pedestrian was moving at almost 100kmph, police said.

Aditi Agarwal, 20, a boutique owner who lives in a housing complex on Narkeldanga Main Road near Subhas Sarobar, was arrested from a five-star hotel some time after the accident.

“The car’s speed was close to 100kmph. It appears Agarwal who was at the wheel failed to negotiate a left turn at that speed and hit the pedestrian,” an officer of the traffic department’s fatal squad in Lalbazar said.

The accident occurred around 6.30am when Hari Mohan Ram, 48, was crossing the Beleghata-bound flank.

“He was flung several feet up in the air and he landed on the car’s bonnet and his head hit the windshield with such force that it cracked. He then landed face first on the road,” Ashis Das, the officer-in-charge of Pragati Maidan police station, had said on Sunday quoting two colleagues who were then patrolling the area on a motorbike.

The airbags of the Honda City hadn’t deployed. The engine immobiliser hadn’t kicked in either, the police said.

Agarwal has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving and drink driving.

The charges carry a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail.

An Alipore court on Sunday sent her to police custody till Tuesday.

An officer of the traffic department said the breathalyser test had shown her alcohol content in blood several times more than the permissible limit of 30ml in 100ml of blood.

“She was unable to recall anything about the accident. Initial, she was in denial. Later, she said she could not recall anything,” the officer said.

She was headed home to Narkeldanga from a nightclub on Topsia Road when the accident occurred, the police said.

Cops tried to check who was her partner on Sunday night since the club allowed only couples. But the search has drawn a blank, the police said.

“We are in process of collecting evidence of drink driving,” an officer said.

Cops will record the statements of people who were with her on Sunday night and of those who attended to her at the hotel where she had taken refuge after the accident, the police said.
