Howrah police on Wednesday arrested two more youths for handling the gun that Sumit Shaw was seen dancing with during the Ram Navami rally in Howrah’s Shibpur on March 30.
Aryan Gupta, 18, and Avinash Yadav, 19, were arrested from Howrah’s Nandibagan and Fakirbagan, respectively, after interrogating Shaw, who was arrested on Tuesday from Bihar’s Munger.
Shaw, Gupta and Yadav were handed over to the CID, which is investigating the case. A Howrah court on Wednesday sent the three in CID custody for eight days.
“Sumit Shaw had initially handed over the gun to his friend Avinash Yadav, who finally kept it with their friend Aryan Gupta. We have recovered the gun. There are a few eyewitnesses who saw the process of the handover of the gun. We will record their statements too,” said Praveen Tripathi, the Howrah police commissioner, told reporters on Wednesday.
“As the case is being investigated by the CID, its officials will proceed with further action. We have assisted them in arresting the accused,” he added.
The video of Shaw brandishing the gun during the Ram Navami rally in Howrah took political centre stage after Trinamul released the video to claim how the BJP had planned a violent rally.
Trinamul national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on March 31 showed the video of the youth with a gun to claim that the violence in Howrah over Ram Navami was part of a bigger conspiracy of the BJP. The saffron camp leaders doubted the veracity of the video and claimed that the Trinamul had planted Shaw in the rally.
However, the arrest of Shaw and subsequent arrests of another two youths on Wednesday made Trinamul leaders substantiate their claim that the BJP had created an environment of provocation through the Ram Navami rally. However, the BJP has continued to refute the charges and has kept on saying that the violence was a Trinamul ploy.
