A special Pocso court in Jalpaiguri sentenced two persons to rigorous imprisonment on Friday in connection with different cases of rape and sexual assault of minor girls.

Rintu Shur, the Judge of the special Pocso court, ordered 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment for a youth who had raped a minor girl five years back.

Sources said in 2019, a 15-year-old girl from an area under the New Jalpaiguri police station was abducted by the youth. He took her to Alipurduar and raped her many times in a rented accommodation.

The girl somehow managed to narrate her ordeal to the house owner which made the latter inform her parents.

They went to Alipurduar and rescued her. Later, they filed a complaint at the New Jalpaiguri police station. Police initiated a probe and arrested the youth.

“Today, the court ordered rigorous imprisonment to the youth who has been convicted in the case, for 20 years,” said Debashish Dutta, the government lawyer of the case.

In another incident, in 2015, a minor girl living in a rural area under the Kotwali police station of Jalpaiguri went to a neighbour’s house. The neighbour sexually assaulted the girl, prompting her to scream and seek help.

Her mother, who was working nearby, ran and caught the accused. She filed a complaint and police arrested the person.

Brown sugar seized

Baishnabnagar police in Malda district arrested two persons on Thursday night and seized narcotics worth around ₹40 lakh from them.

Nazimul Hossain and Ataul Sheikh were held with 404 grams of brown sugar (a derivative of heroin), sources said.
